The word Umpqua has many possible meanings. The most accepted definition is "thunder water". Some other possible meanings are "dancing water" and "satisfied". It is also the name given to a number of bands of Athabaskan speaking Native Americans who lived in the Umpqua River drainage and its surroundings. Umpqua was the name the native people used to refer to the Umpqua River and it's surroundings.
